Freedom Rings, Dictators Panic...

Remember the old sight gag where the grocery stock boy spends all morning building a display, only to have some unthinking customer come along and pull out the key bottom can that causes the whole thing to come tumbling down? In some variations of the gag, it would tumble slowly and the stock boy could for a time catch and replace the cans keeping the facade of the display looking good for a little while before it all crashed. That's what I feel like I am looking at when I look at the middle east today. Ousting Saddam Hussien and holding elections in Iraq was that key can. Look out -- here it comes.

The news from Lebanon looks fantastic, and Syria schedules the withdrawal of troops almost immediately. Egypt's upcoming elections are gaining steam, and popularity. Former Soviet republic, Azerbaijan, looks to be on the brink of going democratic as well. (HT: SmartChristian)

Little Green Footballs points out that in response to the democratic flow, many countries are arresting bloggers. Of course, I am sad for the individual bloggers involved, and I pray for them, but that news gives me hope. As a blogger I am a part of something much bigger than I can possibly imagine. To think, this little seeming waste of electrons is a part of changing the world...

Events in Iran continue to teeter on the edge. I really love this report on EU-Iran nuclear negotiations from the San Francisco Chronicle. They lead not with the status of the talks but with the threat Iran made. Could it be that The Chronicle feels as threatened by blog driven democracy as the mullahs do?

Look out Middle East -- Freedom's Coming.
