George Orwell Lives
Powerline passes on a quote from a BBC story without comment:
The government of Niger has cancelled at the last minute a special ceremony during which at least 7,000 slaves were to be granted their freedom.Well, I'll comment -- That's just scary. I thought we got rid of stuff like that when we got rid of the Soviet Union. Talk about "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."
A spokesman for the government's human rights commission, which had helped to organise the event, said this was because slavery did not exist.
