Washington DC is trying to ban trains containing "hazardous waste" from traveling throug the city. "Hazardous waste" is a legal term. Did you know that is throw away a bottle of nail polish it is hazardous waste? You use it everyday and yet it, simply by throwing it away it becomes "hazardous waste." And oh, by the way, lots of hazardous raw materials move through your city everyday -- in many, many cases the only difference between the two is which direction they are traveling. "Hazardous Waste" has become one of those unreasoned fear terms. We have to get over it.
SOMETIMES
Punitive action for environmental problems is warranted. This is one of them.

...was this past week. Missed it? -- Good! What I want to know is how did we get from something like this to legal battles and blatant socialism?

The first comprehensive survey of glaciers on the Antarctic peninsula has shown that the rivers of ice are shrinking, mostly because of warming of the local climate.From the Finanacial Times:
It is unclear, however, whether the increased temperature causing the shrinkage is a natural regional effect or a result of human-influenced global warming, said the scientists who conducted the study, published this week in the journal Science.
The survey joins a growing body of research on climate change. A study of the Arctic last year found that the ice cap was half the thickness it was 30 years ago and a tenth smaller.It's all in how you write the story.
An American study in February found that warming in the world's oceans could have been caused only by human activity in increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The gas, generated by burning fossil fuels, traps heat on Earth.
