What Are The Ramifications Of This?
The New Scientist reports on a twins study that seems to indicate a genetic component to religiousity.
Well, I hate to tell you all, but based on this, now you're going to have to let all those religious displays back into public. We're born that way.
Until about 25 years ago, scientists assumed that religious behaviour was simply the product of a person's socialisation - or "nurture". But more recent studies, including those on adult twins who were raised apart, suggest genes contribute about 40% of the variability in a person's religiousness. You have to love this. It's discriminatory to ban gay marriages because they are "born that way." "It's a genetic thing no different than race." Isn't that what we are hearing all the time. Isn't this the reasoning that gives us gay pride parades and other public displays of things that many of us would just not like to see.
