Really Cool Chemistry
Few things in chemistry have the "Hey cool" factor going for them. Synthesizing the "buckyball" - that the molecule you see here, was one of them. I promise you, there wasn't a soul in the world that knows anything about chemical synthesis at all that the first time they saw that molecular structure didn't say "Cool!" right out loud.The guy that did it passed away a couple of days ago. This really was an important discovery, but it was of the kind that makes chemistry fun, and that makes Richard Smalley worthy a hearty Blogotional THANKS!
