Comic Art

His mighty horned visage guards the Rainbow bridge approach to the realm of Asgard! He is Heimdall! As we continue our look at Kirby's greatest creations, this week turning again to the Asgardians, we look at one that has always appealed to me.

Who could look more like the Viking of yore than the great Heimdall with that horned helmet. My Scandanavian travels taught me the horned helmet was myth for the Viking, but you have got to admit, it is way cool.

Heimdall is one of those omnipresent characters that has been grossly underdeveloped. Every time anybody goes to Asgard you encounter him, they usually say "Hey!" but what is his story? What does he do when not standing his post? Does he ever not stand his post? How does he keep that bridge so shiny?

These are just a few of the mysteries that surround this character, a character vital to every tale, but seeming insignificant. However, there have been times when he was called upon to do more than ceremonial duty, to hold fast the bridge against invaders, and he did so with strength that rivals even Thor.

Heimdall may indeed be the greatest Asgardian.
