SO BAD, THEY'RE GOOD
So what do you do if you get really incredible super powers, but it really screws up your complexion? Well our guy today chose to become a bad guy - the dreaded Molecule Man.
As we continue our look through some bad guys, this was one that consistently failed to impress me.
Primarily an opponent of the Fantastic Four, this guy had the power to literally reshape reality, but always seemed to be such a petulant sot that he wasted his near god-like status. At one point he even hooked up with a really dominant women (Volcana) as a girlfriend.
First of all, Owen Reece, is one of the few artistic missteps I would place at the feet of Jack Kirby. I mean, come on, those lightening bolts on his face are just lame. It looks like Stan came to Jack with this character idea and Jack could not figure out how to draw a character like this so he put a few squiggles on his face and called it a day.
Kirby's best work was when he did characters of god-like stature, but then, of course, good old bolt face only had god-like power, he definitely lacked in the whole stature thing.
Honestly, I think the decision was to make the character such a wimp so he could be defeated, but it does make it hard to know how to make him look.
Attempts to modernize the look have not helped much. This guy needs a total makeover. Forget the bolts altogether and forget the green and purple - its been overdone.
In the Secret War saga Molecule Man almost reached a stature worthy of his power, but in the end he still ended up a pawn when he should have been a player.
