Good Question

Presbyterian Bloggers, echoing GA Moderator Reyes Chow, asks "why Presbyterian?" On one level it is an excellent question to ask. We should put a bit more thought into our church choices than just "where we are comfortable," and "how bad is the drive?" I have put a lot ofthought to it and the biggest reason is polity. Here is a Baptist take on it.

But at the same time, before we can ask "why" we need to really figure out "what." What are we selecting when we select a church, congregation or denomination? Words like community, worship center, gathering of believers get thrown around, but none of them captures all of what the church should be.

In fact, it is fair to say, what "church" you choose will be somewhat dependent on what you think church should be.

But the real point I want to make here is that there are a huge variety of ideas about what this gathering should be, let alone how it should be organized and go about doing whatever it is they think they should be doing. And further, most of the things that divide us are in that arena and not in the arena of what really matters - Jesus Christ. Said the apostle Paul:
1 Cor 2:2 - For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
If it was not for the fact that it would be come trite, somehow I think that every time we confront this questions which will always be pondered, but never fully answered that we could begin and end every statement with those words.

Or would that make us all evangelists? I don't think so, whatever our gifts, however we approach a task, whatever task it is we are called by the Holy Spirit to do, we do all in the name of Christ. Somehow, if we keep that in mind, I do not think we can go wrong.
